How to Present the Rolling and Unrolling a Mat?

Materials

  • A mat, specifically designed to be both functional and manageable for children aged 3 to 6 years. The mat should measure approximately 24 inches by 36 inches, allowing ample space for activities while being easy for small hands to handle.
    • The material of the mat should be a durable, lightweight fabric such as cotton or a cotton blend, which can easily be rolled and unrolled without creasing, making it ideal for repeated use in a Montessori setting.
  • A flat, stable surface such as a low table or a designated area on the floor. This surface should be clean and clear of obstacles, providing a comfortable space for the child to practice unrolling and rolling the mat.

The following instructions are the montessori basic presentation of Rolling and Unrolling a Mat:

Presentation

Unrolling the Mat:

  1. Prepare to Unroll: Position your left hand flat on the opening of the mat near the bottom to stabilize it.
  2. Set Right Hand: Place your right thumb on the left side of the rolled part of the mat, aligning it horizontally with your left hand.
  3. Secure Grip: Wrap your right fingers around the curve of the mat for a firm hold.
  4. Initiate Unrolling: Twist your right wrist to the right to start unrolling the mat.
  5. Continue Unrolling: Slide your right wrist back to the top of the rolled part of the mat, continuing the unrolling motion.
  6. Complete the Unroll: Continue these movements until the mat is fully unrolled, ensuring it lays flat.
  7. Smooth the Mat: Place your left hand flat on the bottom left side of the mat to keep it in place.
  8. Align the Mat: Position your right hand flat on the mat directly next to your left hand to start smoothing the mat.
  9. Flatten the Surface: Slide your right hand horizontally across the mat to flatten and smooth any wrinkles or folds.
  10. Final Touches: Lift your right hand off the mat, then reposition your left hand near the top of the left side of the mat.
  11. Ensure Evenness: Place your right hand flat directly next to your left hand again, and slide it horizontally across to the right side of the mat to ensure even flatness.
  12. Complete the Process: Lift your right hand off the mat, followed by your left hand, and sit up straight.
  13. Announce Completion: Inform the children, "The mat is now unrolled and ready for use."

Rolling the Mat:

  1. Position the Mat: Ensure the width of the mat is horizontally aligned in front of you, ready for rolling.
  2. Communicate the Task: Clearly state to the children, "We will now roll up the mat carefully."
  3. Prepare Your Hands: Place your right thumb underneath the flap of the mat, approximately one-third from the right edge. Curve your fingers over the top of the flap for a good grip.
  4. Set Left Hand: Similarly, place your left thumb under the flap about one-third from the left edge, curving your left fingers over the top.
  5. Initiate the Roll: Gently rotate both hands outward, away from your body, creating a strong initial curve in the mat’s flap.
  6. Adjust Left Hand Grip: Bring your left thumb back under the curve, applying pressure to stabilize the roll.
  7. Adjust Right Hand: Loosen the pressure slightly with your right hand, then rotate it back so your right thumb goes under the mat while your fingers curve over the roll.
  8. Apply Right Hand Pressure: Firmly apply pressure with your right hand and rotate it away from your body to tighten the roll.
  9. Coordinate Hands: Slightly loosen your grip with your left hand, then rotate it back around to its starting position.
  10. Final Adjustments Left Hand: Strengthen your grip with your left hand and rotate it away from your body to continue the rolling motion.
  11. Continue the Process: Repeat the coordinated movements of both hands until the mat is tightly rolled.
  12. Finalize the Roll: Once the mat is fully rolled, carefully lift your fingers off the mat starting with the left hand and then the right, ensuring the mat remains tightly rolled.
  13. Secure the Roll: Adjust the mat if necessary to ensure it is neatly rolled, and the ends are aligned.

Variations & Extentions

Variations

  • Introduce mats of different textures and thicknesses to challenge the children's handling skills.
  • Add a sequence where children must unroll and roll mats in a specific order, such as by color or size, to enhance their organizational skills.
  • Incorporate a blindfolded variation where children must rely on their tactile sense to properly unroll and roll the mat.

Extension

  • Once the child is proficient with a standard mat, introduce larger or heavier mats to increase the difficulty and encourage further development of motor skills.
  • Connect the activity to lessons on geometric shapes by having children roll the mats into different shapes, such as cylinders or partial rolls, and discuss the properties of these shapes.
  • Encourage children to teach a peer how to unroll and roll a mat, fostering leadership skills and reinforcing their own understanding through teaching.

Recommendations

  • Ensure the mats are clean and in good condition to prevent any distractions or difficulties during the activity.
  • Observe the children closely during the activity to provide immediate feedback and guidance, helping them refine their technique.
  • Praise the children for careful handling and neatness, reinforcing the importance of respect and care for classroom materials.
