How to present Washing a Table in Montessori?
Materials
- One tray containing: Child's table, Pitcher of water, Two small pails or bowls (one for rinsing, one for washing), Sponge, Drying cloth, Soap (in a small container)
The following instructions are the basic presentation of the Washing the Table activity:
Presentation
- Cover the floor underneath the table with a large cloth or paper.
- Pour water from the pitcher into each pail, adding soap to one.
- Dip sponge in soapy water, wring partially dry.
- With soapy sponge, scrub table top, working from outer edges to the center. (Educator: "We clean from the edges towards the center to make sure we cover the whole table.")
- Remove any lingering spots.
- Rinse sponge well.
- Dip sponge into rinse water, squeeze until partially dry, then wipe table top until soap is removed. (Educator: "After we rinse the sponge, we wipe the table again to make sure all the soap is gone.")
- With drying cloth, carefully wipe table until thoroughly dry.
- Empty water from basins and return all materials to their proper places.
- Invite the child to do the same, providing guidance as needed.
